Tyler Thiret

Tyler Thiret is a senior at the University of Notre Dame, majoring in Political Science, with a minor in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (the PPE program). In addition to his major and minor, Tyler has dedicated much of his elective course work to Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, including accounting, business law, and consulting.

Tyler is a student in Notre Dame’s Glynn Family Honors Program, which is comprised of the top 100 incoming freshmen of each class. Throughout their four years, Glynn students take honors courses and small seminars from the University’s top professors in subjects ranging from biology to classical literature, culminating in the writing of a senior honors thesis.

During the entirety of his junior year, Tyler studied in Paris, France at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (the Institute of Political Studies) as a participant in an exchange program between Notre Dame and IEP. In courses with a mixture of French students and other internationals, he was immersed in a multicultural frenzy of political opinion, granting him great insight into political thoughts existing outside the United States, how they are expressed, and how debate operates in an international context.

Tyler’s main area of interest within politics is the ever–important intersection between government and the private sector, particularly in how advocacy influences public policy and how businesses and non–profits communicate with the government. Tyler has studied lobbying and issue advocacy and has incorporated these topics into his senior honors thesis, Strategies of Sales and Marketing in American Political Persuasion.

During the summer of 2011, Tyler obtained an internship with the Washington, D.C. office of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a Denver–based law and lobbying firm. In his capacity as a lobbying intern, Tyler performed research, interacted with clients, organized meetings with policy makers, and prepared memos and briefings on current political activities on Capitol Hill. This practical experience in D.C. politics led to Tyler’s selection in the fall of 2011 as the chair of the Career Development Committee of Notre Dame’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honors society.

Beyond politics, Tyler is deeply interested in business, especially in the areas of strategy, sales, and marketing. He spent two summers working as the canvassing manager for a local branch of Andersen Windows, through which he gained vast knowledge of salesmanship and marketing strategy (not to mention a tough skin). In this capacity, he was consistently the top producer of leads for the company, producing the highest gross sales among the canvassers.

At Notre Dame, Tyler has been active in the Student International Business Council. As a member of the marketing division of SIBC, he worked on a project for NBC Sports to boost viewership of the Kentucky Derby with a campaign based on social media.

An avid golfer and casual sailor, Tyler is originally from Fort Collins, Colorado.
