Jon Porter

Former Congressman Jon Porter (R-NV) serves as a strategic partner and valued member of the CMI team. Jon Porter brings nearly three decades of experience as a public servant at the local, state and federal levels. Known for his legislative abilities and pragmatic political instincts, Porter is a government affairs professional that not only understands how Washington works, but how Main Street works as well.

From his time as City Council Member and Mayor of Boulder City, Nevada, then later as Nevada State Senator, and finally as a widely-respected Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, Porter has always appreciated the delicate intersection between federal, state, and local governmental policy.

Prior to founding the Porter Group, Porter served as Director of Public Policy at Akerman Senterfitt, a full service government relations firm in Washington D.C.

At Akerman Senterfitt, Porter maximized his years of public service and firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing companies doing business with all levels of government to deliver goal oriented results to his clients. He continued to cement his reputation as an extremely conscientious and hard working professional, fully dedicated to those he served.

In addition to his current client work which is focused on energy, defense, transportation, education, gaming, travel, and tourism matters, Porter is also a frequent speaker to a variety of audiences ranging from associations and trade shows to state and national conventions. His lengthy political background enables him to provide unique insight to government policy at both the local and federal level.

As a United States Congressman, Porter served on the Ways & Means Committee, the chief tax writing committee, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Education and Labor Committee. As someone who believes in the power of building strong professional relationships, Porter still maintains close ties to the House and Senate Republican and Democrat Leadership.

Porter's years of success can be attributed to his solution driven, bi-partisan political and business leadership style. With key legislative accomplishments that include the passage of the Schools SAFE Act, the E-Meds Act, which provided incentives to doctors who use e-prescribing technology, and the Natural Resource Protection Cooperative Agreement Act, he has proven he understands how to build a consensus and achieve objectives. Porter was also Co-Chair of the Congressional Travel and Tour Caucus (CTTC) where he and Representative Sam Farr (D-CA) reinvigorated the caucus in a bipartisan fashion attracting close to 100 new Members of Congress to join the coalition.

Porter was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and attended Briar Cliff College. He began his political career in 1983 in Boulder City, Nevada. That same year he also became an agent for Farmers Insurance. In 2002, Porter defeated Clark County Commissioner Dario Herrera and became the newly created 3rd District's first congressional representative, a seat he held until 2008.
