Hilary Kelly
Hilary Kelly is a Project Liaison Intern for Capitol Management Initiatives. As a senior Political Science major at the University of Notre Dame, with a minor in European Studies, Hilary has a strong background in foreign affairs and development. By means of classes focused on the American Congress, the Executive Branch, and the Constitution, Hilary has also acquired a deep understanding of domestic political structures. Hilary has cultivated strong research, writing, and analytic skills during her time at Notre Dame.
In the past four years, Hilary has worked for both government and non–profit organizations. As an intern for Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, Hilary coordinated publicity with local publications, assisted with Family and Life Education classes, and gained knowledge of the interactions between non–profit agencies and local government.
While serving as a Volunteer Teacher for WorldTeach, an NGO, Hilary created lesson plans with a focus on oral English skills and taught elementary and high school students in Hunan Province, China. During a summer internship in Dublin, Ireland, Hilary worked in the Press Office of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. As part of her internship, Hilary posted press clippings and summaries to the Department’s intranet, escorted the official press units of visiting EU officials, updated the listserv for press releases and compiled reports from Irish embassies worldwide.
Always involved, Hilary has honed her leadership skills through a variety of positions on campus. While serving as a Walsh Hall Center for Social Concerns Co–commissioner, Hilary organized or promoted service events for approximately two hundred girls. In her position on the Freshmen Retreat Leadership Team, she collaborated with other students to lead a successful retreat for ninety freshmen.
As Research Assistant to Theology Department faculty, Hilary did interdisciplinary research in the fields of Theology, Sociology, and Psychology as well as in the popular media, which was utilized in implementing the course syllabus for an ethics class. Hilary also works in the University of Notre Dame Office of Information Technology, where she assists students, faculty, and staff with classroom technology.
As Co–Leader for the Gospel of Life Seminar, Hilary helped plan and lead the class that culminated in a trip to Washington DC, during which students engaged with policymakers, research institutions, and non–profits. In addition, Hilary has been active in other programs at the ND Center for Social Concerns. These include an immersion seminar in Appalachia, wherein she learned about the region’s social issues while engaging in direct service, and the Sustainable Development Seminar, in which she dialogued with leaders in Washington D.C.
As the daughter of a Coast Guard pilot, Hilary has lived in Florida, Puerto Rico, Washington, Michigan, New Jersey, and Virginia. Hilary enjoys cooking with her three younger sisters.
